Programme of Study

At N.C.H.S, teaching and learning is organised around the four areas of study identified for Art and Design:

  • Exploring and developing ideas
  • Investigating and making art, craft and design
  • Evaluating and developing
  • Knowledge and understanding
  • Developing, planning and communicating ideas
  • Working with tools, equipment, materials and components
  • Evaluating processes and products
  • Knowledge and understanding of materials and components

For Key Stage 3 children most artwork will be centred on their topic work for the term (see Departmental Schemes). The subject is taught by the class teacher.

Each of the three terms during the year uses as a focus one of the following broad themes in rotation eg:

  • Natural forms
  • People and portrait (themselves and their experiences
  • Culture
  • Colour and Pattern
  • Ceramics

Each of these areas of study is related to, and a starting point for, the term theme.

In addition, Community Art Projects are covered in the summer term working outside whenever possible.

The teaching of this subject at N.C.H.S takes into account the child’s age, aptitude, ability and experience. Teaching also takes account of individual needs enabling all children full entitlement to the programme.
