Home Economics is now a discrete strand of the Learning For Life And Work learning area : The subject is based on the following themes at Key Stage 3 :

- Home and Family Life
- Independent Living
Home Economics is designed to enable pupils to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills to make informed decisions about home and family which may improve the quality of life for themselves and others. Home Economics is a practical subject and practical, productive tasks, related to the home and family, help to develop a range of skills which pupils require for their present and future lives. The knowledge, skills, understanding and competencies developed in home economics all have practical applications which are useful to, and can be used in everyday life.
