Pupils coming to NCHS with Special Education Needs will have been identified in Primary School or on entry in Year 8. Our good ‘working’ relationship with feeder schools has made the transition process as smooth as possible for any child who may need additional support.
Individual needs are met through the staged process of the Identification and Assessment of Special Needs. Help and support is provided by specifically qualified full time and part time staff. In addition we are fortunate to have the expertise of the NEELB Psychology Service, Literacy Support Service, Special Education Branch and Behaviour Support offered by Newtownabbey Guidance Centre.
In recent years the Youth Service has also made a valuable contribution to our Pastoral and Special Needs provision. A local Youth Worker has provided small groups of pupils with the opportunity to deal with a variety of issues ie relationships/interpersonal skills, anger management, self esteem, etc.
We also have a very successful counselling system in place. Many pupils, both those with Special Needs and in the main stream, have benefited from the private and confidential service provided by Contact Youth and New Life Counselling.
