Northern Ireland U13 Cup
Newtownabbey CHS v Larne High
Dixon Park, Ballyclare 31st March 2009
Newtownabbey CHS picked up their first silverware of the season with a hard fought victory over Larne High School in front of a large crowd at Dixon Park. Newtownabbey started the game strongly and nearly took the lead in the first minute when striker Drew Moore powered through the Larne defence before seeing his shot saved excellently by keeper Morton. The game was end to end with both teams keeping the ball well and it wasn’t long before Larne created their first chance but strong defensive play by Dale McManus averted the danger. Both defences were solid and this could be attributed to the super handling of both keepers which meant the game went into the break scoreless.
Half time 0-0
Newtownabbey went straight on the attack from the kick off and their positive play was rewarded instantly when Jason Hunter rose at the back post to score from a deep free kick from Dale McManus. This goal gave Newtownabbey greater confidence and they dominated the game creating some good chances. The second goal came from a great run by captain McManus who danced through the Larne rear guard before hitting the inside of the post from 18 yards, the ball fell to Jason Hunter who gleefully tapped home. Larne High did pull a consolation goal back in the last minute but it wasn’t to be enough as Newtownabbey held on to collect the cup. The cup was presented to both Dale McManus and Craig Alexander by Mark Watson of the Northern Ireland Schools Football Association.
